U7s v Kingston... another storming display by Cumnor.
Despite a mix up with the kit, Cumnor emerged unbeaten in another friendly fixture (perhaps we should always play in red?)
The A's held their shape and put together some crisp passing moves to ensure a stunning 5-0 win.
Adam M was a strong presence in goal and commanded his area well. Rory continued his excellent form from last week and made some telling interceptions. In midfield, Ollie and James battled hard for the ball and distributed well. Particular credit must go to James who almost didn't play due to a recent illness. Out wide, Will and Ben were a constant threat to Kingston... and they also tracked back extremely well to contain the dangerous Kingston number 7, Tommy. Up front, capt. Fyn showed his natural goalscoring instincts with three beautifully taken goals.
In the first half, Cumnor pressed forward from the whistle. Will made some fine breaks, hugging the left touchline and setting Fyn up for goal number 1. A lively Ben C scored the second when his smart shot was deflected in off an unfortunate defender. Tim made sure that Ben rightly claimed the goal! More slick passing saw Will put Fyn through for his second and a lead of 3-o at half-time.
We changed it around for the second-half with Ollie finally getting his chance in goal. The dynamic Adam M slotted nicely into midfield and pushed forward with real purpose. Will got the fourth goal burying a difficult chance with his right foot before Fyn finished off his hat-trick in true O'Shea style. James took a much-needed breather at the back and Rory came into midfield and really got stuck in.
Well done everyone... and bragging rights for Ben C when he goes back to school on Monday and faces all his Kingston friends!
The B's fought well and deserved their 1-1 draw. Ben Mc was once more very assured in goal in the first half. Joe - our player of the week last week - was superb in defence yet again and was well partnered by Adam W. In midfield, Toby, Henry and Binky fought for every ball. Laurie started up front but was much happier dropping into midfield where he could be right in the thick of the action.
Cumnor made some excellent breaks with Toby being especially dangerous out wide and on the edge of the box. In an astute tactical move by the coaches(!), Binky was pushed up front and within seconds was through on goal. Showing nerves of steel he slid the ball past the goalie for a 1-0 lead. Kingston pressed forward and managed to draw level just before half-time.
In the second-half, Henry replaced Ben Mc in goal and made a brilliant save with his feet which kept us in the game. In a fast, end-to-end half, both teams tested each other to the limit. Joe, Toby and Laurie tackled hard and both Binky and Adam W took knocks. Adam M was called on as a late replacement and made some powerful runs. For the second week running Adam W made a telling interception with his back to the ball (great awareness, Adam!)
The game finished 1-1 and for the second week running, the boys showed real character and fight.
It was an excellent day and we were made to feel very welcome by the Kingston players, coaches and parents (great bacon butties, too!)
That means we've played 4, won 3 and drawn 1. What an excellent start to the season.
