Cumnor U7s v Witney Vikings U7s 17 Nov (friendly)

Goal Glut at The Closes

In an all action encounter with a spirited Witney Vikings, Cumnor put in two clinical - and winning - performances. In the first match, Binky threatened from the kick-off going very close with an early effort. Henry was quickly into his stride too and almost scored before Witney could draw breath. But after two early scares the visitors settled and attacked well down the left flank before goalkeeper Toby collected the ball and put a mighty kick up field. From the knockdown Binky was there again and saw his shot cleared from the line. After another Witney attack, Ben Mc gathered the ball in the Cumnor area, threaded a short pass through the crowd and set Binky free to run the whole length of the field to score a great individual goal.

Minutes later, Cumnor were back in the Witney danger zone when Henry powered through and unleashed a great shot drawing an excellent save from the Witney keeper. But Binky was on hand to pounce and slot his - and Cumnor's - 2nd home. Binky netted his hat-trick after another Rooney-esque stinger from Henry fell at his feet. With Joe yet again rock solid at the back and Adam W, Laurie and Ben Mc scrapping for everything in midfield... Binky and Henry were enjoying the freedom to attack.

3-0 half-time.

In the second-half, Toby went wide on the left and Joe went in. Toby was instantly in the action - using all that pent up frustration at being in goal - and set up Henry for his 1st and Cumnor's 4th. Despite playing in defence, Henry cropped up out wide, slid a wonderful ball through to Binky who couldn't quite finish it. Within seconds of the miss, Toby went through to score his 1st goal and take Cumnor to a commanding 5-0 lead.

Despite being well ahead, Cumnor continued to play football. Binky was again on the receiving end of some good midfield work to score his 4th of the match. But it wasn't all Cumnor, Witney threatened and would have scored if Joe hadn't rushed the striker and put him off. Another great midfield interception set Henry (now giving up his defensive duties completely!) free to score another excellent goal. 7-0 but Witney weren't finished; a hopeful shot went skimming towards Joe who aimed a massive kick at it, missed, and saw the ball roll past him into the net. Unlucky Joe... but you still have to go in goal when it's your turn!

With seconds left Henry had a chance to claim his deserved hat-trick but sent the ball inches wide.

Result: 7-1 and a terrific performance full of excellent movement, strong tackling and great finishing especially by Binky and Henry. Well done.

In the second match Cumnor started with Fyn in goal and Will up front. Ben C was straight into the action and teased the Witney defence with an early run. More Cumnor pressure saw Adam M burst through a crowd of players to score a smartly-taken goal. With Cumnor organized and disciplined, the chances kept coming and Will grabbed the 2nd goal. More clever work by Ben saw Cumnor go agonisingly close again.

With Rory solid at the back, Cumnor were able to hold their shape and attack. But we weren't afraid to go Route 1 if necessary with a whacking great kick by Fyn controlled nicely by Will who just over ran the ball before getting his shot in. The chances kept coming with Adam and James - a potent force in midfield - both going close. Will had a cracking shot saved by the Witney keeper only for Ollie to score from the rebound and put Cumnor 3-0 up.

By now, Cumnor were getting a bit goal crazy and although we played some nice football, we sacrificed our shape and discipline in the pursuit of goals. Ollie did remember to pass however, and set Will up for his second. Will repaid the favour a minute later as Ollie banged home Will's rebound. But the best Cumnor move was saved for the last seconds of the half: James received the ball wide left, looked up and found Will who played a first time ball into Ollie to score his 3rd. A reminder that, when we look for the pass, we play better football.

Half-time 7-0

In the second-half, Rory replaced Fyn in goal who returned to his usual position up front.... and it wasn't long before the captain - and Cumnor's very own 'fox in the box' - got on the goal sheet turning Ben C's corner in. Will reverted to his wide left position and played a lovely pass into the rampaging James who took his goal nicely. Another sweet Will pass saw Fyn go close to grabbing his 2nd. Full credit to Witney however, who kept pushing forward. Rory had little to do in goal which made his superb save - low down to the right - even more impressive. Ollie was asked to play at the back but was determined to get forward (and claim an outright lead in the race for the Golden Boot, perhaps?) Cumnor's final - and 10th - goal was a Witney own goal. Then, with seconds left, Witney launched one last attack and just managed to squeeze the ball past an unlucky Rory. It was the 1st goal this Cumnor team have conceded all season.

A 10-1 win is an impressive feat. Again, Cumnor took all their chances well. Despite only scoring three goals in the second-half, the coaches both felt it was a much better team performance.

Two matches, two wins... fantastic effort and well done to everyone.

Cumnor Minors U7s 2007/08

Cumnor U7s v Stanford Youth U7s 3rd Nov 2007 (friendly)

The unbeaten run continues!

Beautiful morning and two more excellent performances against a very spirited Stanford Youth.

The B's were involved in another roller coaster match full of hard tackling, strong running and slick passing. Binky had little to do in goal in the first-half due mainly to another terrific defensive performance by Joe. In midfield Henry, Laurie, Ben Mc and Adam W were everywhere whilst Toby was a constant threat in attack. It was a real tussle in the middle and the deadlock was broken when Ben Mc seized on a loose ball in the Stanford area and scored his first goal for Cumnor Minors. Well done, Ben!

Half-time: 1-0 Cumnor.

In the second-half, Laurie replaced Binky in goal and was immediately called upon to make a sharp save. Binky was sprightly with the ball at his feet and he and Henry continued to make incisive breaks. Adam handled the pressure of playing his 'home' team exceedingly well and was influential on the left. Toby went looking for the ball and was central to many of our best moves. However, Stanford started to look dangerous but Joe was marvellous with his no nonsense interceptions. As in recent weeks, the boys dug in, fought for one another and looked like holding onto the win until the live wire Stanford number 7 scored a spectacular goal. Laurie could have been 10 foot tall with telescopic arms and he still would have struggled to keep out such a lob. Unlucky. 1-1.

There was drama in the last seconds as Henry (our late goal specialist) saw his excellent shot hit the post. Final whistle, 1-1, unbeaten.

Earlier, the A's put in another superb team effort to continue their impressive start to the season with a 6-0 win. James barely touched the ball in goal in the first-half (relax, you've done your stint in goal now, James!). Rory was again, awesome at the back, timing his runs to perfection and snuffing out the Stanford attacks. Will, Ben C, Adam M and Ollie were quite unstoppable in midfield and Fyn threatened every time he had the ball.

Ollie - playing like Steven Gerrard - was quite magnificent in the middle and scored early on. Will netted goal number two after the Stanford goalie saved Fyn's shot before Ollie grabbed his second. By now Cumnor were firmly in control and played some lovely passes into space and down the flanks. Adam M showed great touch and awareness. Ben continued the good work with a thundering goal before Will scored his second... and his first goal of the season with his favoured left foot.

Half-time: 5-0

In the second-half Ben went into goal and had to put up with his dad standing behind him offering 'advice'. James and Rory pushed into midfield and Will dropped back into defence. It was a much tighter half and Cumnor probably got a bit carried away with the scoreline and went chasing the ball. Stanford stayed organised and kept battling. Will went wandering and left his defensive duties behind but luckily, the ever-watchful Rory was there to cover. Cumnor only really had one chance in the second half and hat-trick hero Ollie was on hand to take it.

Final score: 6-0. Wonderful work, boys!

It was a fantastic morning and Stanford were great guests considering they only had 8 players. They battled hard and never complained.

That means played 6, won 4, drawn 2.
